Project: Data-driven Interactive Genealogy Tree Construction

Description
The construction of genealogy trees is typically done by patching pieces of information together found by browsing historic records with, for instance, birth, marriage, or burial registrations.  Nowadays, many of these records have been digitized, allowing for obtaining results faster. However, finding, precise matches is hindered by name variations, migrations, incomplete data, non-unique results, etcetera. Consequently, fully automatic creation of these trees is not possible. On the other hand, manual creation of such trees can benefit from ordering search results by likeliness, where a measure of likeliness can be obtained in a data-driven way, e.g. by considering the distribution of the ages of fathers and mothers when a kid is born.

The assignment is to design a visual tool that helps a user to interactively build a genealogy tree using data-driven elements.

The data used for this project consists of publicly available archives, for instance, like those that can be found at here (English). The original data is in Dutch, but the digitized data can be searched in English.
