Project: Visual Analysis of equipment failure patterns at ASML

Description
ASML collects and analyzes event log data from thousands of machines in the field. This data is used to diagnose equipment failures in near real-time: often ASML’s diagnostic software can recommend which repair action to take. In addition, a  database with all these machine failures is maintained, whereby each failure is characterized by a set of standardized log symptoms. Next, these symptoms are checked against rules and against previous failures to classify (or “diagnose”) the failures. The numbers of failures, symptoms, and rules are all huge, making it difficult for experts to get an overview of how well this diagnostic system is performing. For example, rules often overlap, leading to multiple alternative diagnoses. The aim of the project is to develop an interactive visual analytics system that enables experts to judge the similarity of alternative diagnoses, and thus enable ASML to continuously improve this automated diagnostic system (e.g. pruning the set of rules).
